Do you have fire decals on your windows? Interestingly, nearly all modern fire departments around the country do not recommend using them. Here are some reasons:
- The decals may give you and your family a false sense of security and may imply it’s safe for children to wait to be rescued, rather than respond immediately on their own.
- The decals may inadvertently alert a burglar or intruder where children sleep in the home. This could put children or the entire household at risk.
- Firefighters may enter a bedroom with a decal on the window to search for children when in truth the children have changed rooms, grown up, or moved out.
- Family members that may usually sleep or play in “decaled” room may be in a different part of the house when the fire breaks out.
Firefighters are trained to make thorough searches for anyone inside a burning building. If you need more information, contact your local fire department about their view on window decals, emergency locator decals or stickers.
