4 Reasons NOT to Use Emergency Window Decals

Do you have fire decals on your windows? Interestingly, nearly all modern fire departments around the country do not recommend using them. Here are some reasons:

  1. The decals may give you and your family a false sense of security and may imply it’s safe for children to wait to be rescued, rather than respond immediately on their own.
  2. The decals may inadvertently alert a burglar or intruder where children sleep in the home. This could put children or the entire household at risk.
  3. Firefighters may enter a bedroom with a decal on the window to search for children when in truth the children have changed rooms, grown up, or moved out.
  4. Family members that may usually sleep or play in “decaled” room may be in a different part of the house when the fire breaks out.

Firefighters are trained to make thorough searches for anyone inside a burning building. If you need more information, contact your local fire department about their view on window decals, emergency locator decals or stickers.
